The term Mala is derived from the, Sanskrit: माला; mālā, meaning 'garland' in which a string of beads is used for prayer and or meditation. Malas are typically made with 18, 27, 54 or 108 beads and it is said that Yogis and Buddhists were the first to use a Mala to enhance their spiritual practices. Also called Yoga beads, a Mala is used to keep count while repeating a “Japa” which is a spiritual discipline involving the meditative repetition of a mantra or a Devine name. They Can be worn everyday around the neck or wrist to remind yourself to be mindful. Malas can be made of various different beads and gemstones and just like a Malas means more than it appears, each of the different stones have different meanings and properties. I find most people choose their special Mala by finding the one that they are most drawn to.
